Histon & Impington Primary School
We were appointed by Cambridgeshire County Council via a two-stage design and build procurement process to be the contractor and designer to develop and deliver the scheme, creating a new 2FE (420 place) primary school on a greenfield site with the capability for an early years facility to cater for the growing populations of Histon and Impington.
The new purpose-built school includes 14 classrooms over two storeys and was designed to reflect its immediate rural setting as a contemporary educational barn. The building also includes a large activity/dining hall and an adjoining smaller hall, which can be opened into one large space, and is intended to be used by the community outside of school time. External spaces include sports pitches and playgrounds.
As the first ever new-build primary school that R G Carter has delivered on green belt land, we were delighted that despite the challenges presented by the highways works as well as Covid-19 restrictions that the country has faced in the last year. We take pride in knowing that we were able to deliver this prestigious and much-needed new School for Cambridgeshire County Council and the local residents of Histon and Impington with great success and very minimal impact on the delivery.
Having seen the School become occupied earlier this year, and opened on the agreed and scheduled date to key workers and vulnerable children (following the Government’s announcement of a third national lockdown) we are proud local contractors who are pleased with the quality of the building and look forward to delivering future School’s in the county in the future in collaboration with the Council.
Histon and Impington Infant School Headteacher Jonathan Newman added: “We are all incredibly excited about the new journey we are taking. It would have been wonderful to have had the opportunity to welcome everyone into the school and to start planning an official opening, but we will be doing that as soon as it is appropriate and possible to do so. Clearly this was not the start to the New Year at a new school that any of us wanted but we are looking forward to making new memories here. At the same time we bid a fond farewell to the Infant School site which housed many of our children’s parents, grandparents, great grandparents and possibly even great, great grandparents.”
The scheme completed on-time despite the challenges of the global pandemic.
