Houstone Secondary School
Appointed under the Suffolk County Council Framework, via a two-stage tendering process, RG Carter were delighted to be awarded the contract of a new 6FE secondary school with associated facilities in Houghton Regis on the Kingsland Campus.
The project was developed on Central Bedfordshire Council owned land which consisted of a mixture of tenancies across the site, including a leisure centre. This development was the first new secondary school to ever be built in Houghton Regis.
Now built, the new School has provided an additional 220 school places to the area and a new 6th form to support with Council its New School Places programme, changing its system from a three tier to a two tier. It has also provided the area with additional secondary school places in line with the local housing growth.
The new school consists of a three-storey school building, sports hall, all-weather pitch and car park, and a new vehicle access to the school from Parkside Drive and additional pedestrian access to connect with the new houses on the nearby Linmere Development. As part of the project, we incorporated many of the sustainability principles of the Department for Education (DfE) and Central Bedfordshire Council sustainability checklists, aligned with the overall design ethos.
This has been a much-anticipated moment that marks an exciting new chapter in the lives of young learners, setting the stage for their bright future. Houghton Regis has seen significant growth in recent years and this state of the art school will provide an exciting and modern learning environment for the increasing numbers of local children. I look forward to seeing how everyone is settling in.
