Ground has been broken at King’s College’s Cranmer Road site, which will provide new sustainable student accommodation – the first of its kind in Cambridge.
To mark this important milestone in the project, the Provost of King’s, Professor Michael Proctor, and Project Manager Shane Alexander joined representatives from R G Carter at a ground-breaking ceremony on site.
Speaking at the ceremony, Richard Clark, Director of R G Carter said:
“The ground-breaking ceremony was a great opportunity for us to welcome staff, to mark the start of the development and thank everyone involved. Our focus now is on delivering a successful project and providing quality sustainable accommodation that will serve students for many years to come.”
Philip Isaac, Domus Bursar of King’s College, said:
“This building represents a significant commitment to existing and future students, as well as fostering the growth of a community spirit on the site.”
The accommodation, situated in existing College grounds on Cranmer Road, will provide 59 graduate rooms across two new buildings to create a unified campus.
The student housing will be built to a Passivhaus standard, a sustainable housing initiative, resulting in ultra-low energy buildings that need very little fuel for heating or cooling.
It is expected that students will take up occupation in Autumn 2019.
