Aylsham Medical Day Unit at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital

R G Carter were contracted to reconfigure and refurbish the Aylsham Ward at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to transform it into a recovery unit for the new Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Orthopaedic Centre (NaNOC).

The project included an extension to an existing escape route, new store rooms, a new plant room on the roof and new M&E throughout.

A complete overhaul internally created 5 single-patient rooms, two six-bed rooms and one four-bed room along with WCs, shower rooms and ensuites. Staff rest areas, a physiotherapy area, a kitchen and drug preparation areas were also created.

Works on site were challenging with limited space and other contractors working on the adjacent orthopaedic theatres within the same site limits. Continual coordination and communication with key stakeholders including hospital management, facilities management and other contractors was key to ensure there were no interruptions to hospital operations.
