Community Diagnostic Centre at James Paget University Hospital

The new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at the James Paget University Hospital houses the very latest diagnostic equipment, including new MRI and CT scanners, ultrasound imaging equipment and an X-ray room to diagnose and monitor a range of conditions including cancer, heart disease, respiratory diseases, trauma, musculoskeletal diseases and neurological conditions.

The CDC is a steel framed building sitting on pad foundations. The external facade comprises facing brickwork, composite cladding and aluminium curtain walling. There is a flat felt roof throughout and a fully bunded first floor plant room. Rooms containing specialist medical equipment are lead-lined for radiation protection purposes Hygienic finishes include PVC wrapped doors and IPS panelling throughout.
The roof accommodates PV panels, an air chiller, air-source heat pumps, air-handling units and a quench pipe to release emergency cooling gases from the MRI scanner.

Working on a live operational hospital site with a helipad and blue-light traffic in close proximity, R G Carter liaised daily with hospital and facilities management to ensure there was no interruption to Air Ambulance manoeuvres, the blue-light traffic route, general traffic, pedestrians and other hospital services.

As well as completing the building structure, the project team assisted with co-ordinating the installation of the specialist scanning, imaging and diagnostic equipment with the suppliers and hospital management.
